Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and English as a Second Language (ESL)

Improve your English skills in a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. Bridges Niagara offers LINC and ESL classes for beginner to intermediate learners from, Literacy to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 6. Classes focus on building practical skills in:

• Speaking
• Listening
• Reading
• Writing

Lessons are connected to everyday life in Canada and may include topics such as employment, healthcare, transportation, banking, education, community services, and preparing for Canadian citizenship.

About the Program

The LINC and ESL programs help eligible newcomers improve their English for daily life, work, further education, and participation in the community.

Before starting classes, learners complete a Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test

(CLBPT) at YMCA Newcomer Services to determine the class level that best matches their

current English skills.

Students learn through classroom activities, real-life language tasks, group work, and ongoing

assessment. Instructors provide regular feedback and support learners as they work toward their

language and settlement goals.

Who Can Attend?

LINC and ESL programming is available to eligible newcomers, including permanent residents

and refugees.

Eligibility will be confirmed during the registration process.
